Photography trends so bad that they became memes

0

Photography is undoubtedly the lowest entry point art. You can just pick up your phone and snap it away. With billions of images created every day, they sometimes follow trends. Many novice photographers follow pages on Instagram that “repost bangers”. However, these blasts are very far from what photography is all about. In this article, I’m going to talk about some of the worst photography trends that have become memes.

Preface

Art and trends don’t mix. Great artists create their own trends. Photography is not about following trends and producing work that gets a lot of likes on Instagram. Pages with generic portraits of young women have more followers than Annie Leibovitz. Is there something wrong with that? No, it’s what people like. Generic portraits of young women, however, say little about the creative possibilities that photographers worldwide offer. These trends are goofy, but it’s also sad to see them so popular.

Lens ball

Oh baby, this doesn’t need an introduction. When lentil balls came out they offered a strangely unique view of images. While everything in the ball was in focus, the rest of the frame was all bokeh. However, when more and more people jumped on the bandwagon and took the same generic picture of a lens ball, the whole idea got pretty boring. That said, there’s nothing wrong with using a lens ball, but there may be a few things that are wrong with taking the same picture over and over again.

Oversized glasses + girls + neon or Christmas lights = banger

It’s easy to see why this one is so popular as it contains the two ingredients needed to make a photo trend: beautiful women and creamy bokeh. Neon lights provide the unique bokeh with red and blue contrast to each other, and the beautiful woman stands there with a look that is as boring as boredom. She doesn’t enjoy the portrait and probably couldn’t take care of the bokeh.

Lens in front of a landscape

I think this one started when YouTube landscape photographers became popular. Sure, it can be interesting to hold a lens and show how the image in it is inverted. So for a couple of times. Doing it over and over to show the lens is pretty repetitive, and there’s not much you can think of to change that. But how about putting the lens on a camera and photographing a landscape with it?

Woman looking back at you while holding one hand in an exotic location

I feel like all the couples have a photo like this one. To be completely honest, I can’t quite understand the meaning of the picture. Sure, exotic place, sure, your partner, but why leave them out of the ordinary?

Feet dangle over the edge of a building

By far the most dangerous there. Often taken on the roofs of abandoned buildings, this photo is two things: way too dangerous and possibly illegal as the rules of unauthorized entry can be strict and pathologically strict.

Half-naked woman on the back of a motor home next to a unique landscape or cliff

Not only are camper photos one of the most instagram-like things out there, but with the addition of half-naked women, these images become unstoppable collectors. The RV lifestyle generally fits in with the belief in being truly free and independent. That is of course if you enjoy having a suitable place to work and the opportunity to take a bath to take photos with a lot of preferences.

Faux old ladders with Hollywood lights against a canvas background

Painted backgrounds are a very popular yet expensive thing. They are very popular with both amateur and professional photographers. I made one myself. However, because they are so popular, the images with them often run poorly. It is not enough to simply stick a background behind the subject and take a picture. To get a good picture with backgrounds like this, you need to control your light very well. Sometimes, to add an antique feel, some put a painter’s ladder or a large fresnel lamp in the frame. Yeah, we understand you want Hollywood. But unfortunately that’s a far cry from Hollywood portraits. If you want a film look, you can light your model with a Fresnel. That would look very cinematic and more like Hollywood. An umbrella is also helpful.

TikToks with “strange” photo shoots

“I asked that stranger to do a photo shoot.”

“At first she hesitated (always a she, right?).”

“But then she finally said yes.”

“Look at these bangers.”

Go on to feature oversaturated photos of girls against Christmas lights with lens ball in a familiar place holding hand with a Hollywood light. This does not need any explanation. I don’t think strangers would allow you to steal their time for more than two seconds, so the people in the video are fake and it’s creepy if these are real people.

I know from experience that the portraits of strangers are a whole movement in street photography, and I did them myself. I think it goes against the meaning of portrait because a portrait should show a personality, not a person who dresses imaginatively. Before taking a portrait, the person is best studied, understood, and admired. Then and only then is the portrait a work of art and not a “blast”.

Close thoughts

I wrote this article to highlight some of the trends plaguing photography right now. In a year they will be different. However, one thing will stay the same: the idea of following viral trends in order to go viral. Art shouldn’t be about following trends. If anything, art should defy trends. As a commercial photographer, I have to follow trends to a lesser extent. It is important to distinguish between trends that are comparable to copying the exact picture and trends that inspire you to develop the idea further. In my work, I follow a trend towards contrast and vivid colors, mainly because I predict that this is how the advertising world will drift. I’m also following this rising vibration trend because I like it. Ultimately, what you like to find creative and different should be your trend. A TikTok banger shouldn’t.

What do you think of these trends? Are you the first step to creativity or the worst thing you can do to creativity? Have you ever made a “banger” yourself? Share your experience in the comments! I love to read it.
