Obituary for Verla Borgen (1949-2021) – Garretson, SD

Verla Borgen, 72 years old, of Hartford, SD, died on Friday, December 3, 2021 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
The funeral will take place on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 10.30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Hartford, SD, under the direction of Rev Denise Broverak. He is buried in Hartford Cemetery.
The tour takes place on Monday, December 6th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Hartford.
Instead of flowers, the family would like memorials to be directed to the Christ Lutheran Christian Education Fund.
Verla Jean Borgen was born on April 8, 1949 in Sioux Falls, SD to Duane and Victoria (Krogstad) Howe. She grew up in the Baltic States and graduated from the Baltic High School. She continued her education at South Dakota State University with a bachelor’s degree in education.
Verla began her teaching career in Philip, SD, and continued her teaching career at West Central High School for 35 years. Her greatest joy in teaching was watching her students grow as individuals and hearing about their personal success after graduation.
Her favorite hobbies included quilting, sewing, and landscape photography of landscape scenes.
After retiring, Verla continued teaching through tutoring, substitution classes and traveling to warmer climates during the winter.
Verla leaves behind her husband, Darrell Borgen of Hartford, SD; Daughter Amy Borgen of Sioux Falls, SD; Son Cory (Janson Exner) Borgen of Hartford, SD; Grandsons, Taylor and Hadley Borgen; Mother, Vicky Howe of Sioux Falls, SD; Brothers Don (Linda) Howe from Lincoln, NE and Dennis (Barb) Howe from Sioux Falls, SD; Nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
Her father, Duane Howe, preceded her in death.
