Washington’s passion for photography takes him into the wide world of sports

LUDINGTON — Joe Washington is a relative newcomer to the professional photography scene, having officially started in 2014.

But he has always had an interest in capturing images of people and events, ever since he was very young growing up in Louisiana. Washington moved to Michigan in 2001 and now lives in Ludington.

Growing up without the financial means to buy a camera and the necessary equipment, Washington was unable to fulfill his dream of becoming a photographer.

“When my parents asked me what I wanted for my birthday or for Christmas, I always said a camera,” Washington said. “I’ve always had this love and desire to photograph.”

He did not attend college but took online courses to learn about the use of lighting and lighting

how to operate a camera manually instead of just having what is often referred to as a “point and shoot”.

But that doesn’t mean Washington isn’t trained in photography.

“Every year I go to a photographers conference in St. Louis, Missouri,” Washington said. “There are a lot of great photographers coming to this conference from all over the world. They organize workshops and courses. You basically learn from the best. I’ve been doing that for a few years.”

Last year, Washington became a volunteer photographer at Ferris State University in Big Rapids and worked in the athletic department. His duties included football, basketball, volleyball and soccer.

Washington covered numerous topics while behind his camera. But in the end, the sport became his special passion.

“I got to a point where I was like, ‘What’s the genre I really like or enjoy the most'”? asked Washington. “I would say it’s sports photography.”

He approached the Local Sports Journal and it turned out to be a huge win for both parties. His work is regularly published on the journal’s website.

Aside from photography, Washington works for the Michigan Education Association as

employee representatives. It covers a large area covering everything from Oceana to Benzie County.
